Our proprietary ink fades completely in 9-15 months.

In short, it’s different—and so is the way it heals.

Ephemeral tattoo studio artist giving a temporary tattoo

Since Ephemeral tattoos are done with a needle on the skin, our bodies need time to heal. This happens in three stages over about 3-4 weeks.

resealing stage of skin healing for temporary tattoo

Stage 1: Resealing

Week 1. Your body is in the inflammatory phase where it's trying to heal the wound and protect the area.

While you wear your HC patch you may notice the patch filling with a bluish liquid. This is just your HC patch and your body healing.

Stage 2: Rebuilding

Weeks 2-3. Your body is starting to rebuild the skin while still transitioning from inflammation. Different skin types experience this phase differently.

Most commonly there will be a combination of flakiness, white patches, blurry lines, redness, itchiness, or white dots. This is all normal.

Stage 3: Remodeling

Week 4. After your appointment most of your tattoo should look crisp and vibrant. You'll know this when the redness around the lines is gone.

That said, your skin may continue to heal. This is called the remodeling phase where your body increases collagen to the tattoo and your tissues begin to strengthen. Look below for some common healing patterns that are totally normal.

It's Normal If

healing expectations

Some lines are vibrant and healed.

Some lines are raised.
This can last up to 3-5 months but isn’t a
bad thing, just unique to your skin type.

Flakiness and/or white dots.
If you experienced white dots during the earlier healing stages this may take another month to clear up.

Redness, blurred lines, or dryness.
This will all clear up as your body heals.

Remember to...

Keep it out of the sun for the first month. Then use SPF 50.

Stay out of the water during the first 3-4 weeks of healing.

Don’t itch, pick, or rub the tattoo. It will heal on its own time!
